Ride Details
The route is predominantly a hill climber's ride starting in Gawler and finishing in Gawler.

After leaving Gawler, the ride takes in the full 23 km Stuart O'Grady Bikeway (SOB) alongside the Northern Expressway.

The ride exits the southern end of the SOB and takes a combination of back roads including Mill Rd, Greyhound Rd and Mumford Rd until a left turn onto Heaslip Rd. Heaslip Rd is only ridden for a short distance before a right turn onto Edinburgh Rd takes the route through the Edinburgh Precinct.

The route continues on to Salisbury and eventually Salisbury Heights, where the first long steady climb starts on The Grove Way.

Reaching the top of The Grove Way gives way to a quick downhill, leading to its intersection with Golden Grove Rd which is ridden for a short distance until a right turn onto the One Tree Hill Rd marks the end of suburbia.

The visit to One Tree Hill is only fleeting as a right turn onto Cornishmans Hill Rd starts the climbing again, eventually reaching the Gawler-One Tree Hill Rd via a short section of Uley Rd.

A left turn onto Kentish Rd begins the final downhill run into Gawler which completes the ride.

The Gawler Wheelers Group Ride Guidelines and Group Ride Recommendations must be read prior to attending a Group Ride Event.

Wendy and  I  will join you somewhere in Edinburgh.

A few notes about the route after the crappy weather this week - the bike lane along Fenden Rd and Saints Rd (Salisbury) is in poor condition - lots of tree debris and sand at the building site.  Also,  be careful on the ascent of The Grove Way due to sand having been washed over the shoulder and into the inside lane in several areas.  Good news is that Snake Gully looked clean yesterday afternoon, and now that it's been re-surfaced should be FUN!!!!!!!!!

Been very sick so may just do the beginners hill ride.

Vanessa, there will be plenty of support. I was well looked after.

I'd like to do this one ... I love the Grove Way :) A little nervous if i will get left behind ... is there a TEC for this one?

Comment by Scott Davis on July 10, 2014 at 21:07

It looks like all the people I usually ride with are on this route, so I could well find myself on my first non-beginner Hills ride.

Hi all. The Gawler weather forecast for Saturday morning is below fyi. Looking reasonable, albeit on the cool side. Don't forget to layer-up. 3 GW rides to choose from this week. See you there. Only two sleeps to go!

Looking forward too it so can everyone who is doing a rain dance please stop now. I want to ride! I believe I have a "few good men" to look after me. Bring on Saturday.

Will probably join in half way.  Re-group at our place if necessary (water/toilet break, etc).  There is building work on Fenden Rd and the bike lane at this point sometimes has a bit of debris.

If you are a candidate for the MODERATE paced event then you should incorporate some preparation before turning up for the event, since you may in fact need to become the Ride Leader.

If you assume the role of Ride Leader for the MODERATE event then your responsibilities include:

  • Current Bicycle SA membership

  • A detailed knowledge of the HILL ride route

  • Ensuring that the provided 'Sign On Sheet' for the MODERATE group is completed

  • Carrying the 'Sign On Sheet' for the duration of the ride and contacting missing riders using your own mobile phone if required

  • Keeping the MODERATE group's ride on schedule

  • Making decisions regarding impromptu route detours and additional re-groups when required

  • The authority to halt the HILL ride and plan a return to base if required

  • Confirming an RSVP for the MODERATE event and optionally leaving a comment on the Event page indicating your intention to be the ride leader

Note: Gawler Wheelers HILL events do not include dedicated Tail End Charlie (TEC) support.
